1.    Citation

    These Regulations may be cited as the Botswana Defence Force (Honours) Regulations.

2.    Award of honours

    The honours described in the Schedule shall be the honours which may be awarded to members of the Botswana Defence Force under the conditions specified therein.

1.    Founder Officer Medal

    (1) The Founder Officer Medal (F.O.M.) shall be awarded to all commissioned officers holding commissions at the formation of the Botswana Defence Force.

    (2) The medal shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold and shall be circular in shape with a diameter of 40 mm, the obverse consisting of a red enamelled circular border with the legend “FOUNDER OFFICER MEDAL F.O.M.” in gold letters, and an inner circle consisting, in relief, of a gold scroll bearing the title “BOTSWANA DEFENCE FORCE” surmounted by two circles, the outer circle enamelled in bottle green bearing the legend “THEBE YA SECHABA” in gold letters, and the small inner circle enamelled in red with the letters “B.D.F.” in gold, the two circles being connected by crossed swords and surmounted by the Coat of Arms of Botswana, in gold relief, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (3) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 2.6 mm width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths—

2.    Long Service Order

    (1) The Long Service Order (L.S.O.) may be awarded to any member of the other ranks of the Botswana Defence Force who has had service in the Botswana Defence Force, with good conduct, for a period of not less than 15 years.

    (2) In the calculation of time, in making the award, any previous service in the Botswana Police Force of such member shall be taken into consideration.

    (3) The order shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold and shall be in the shape of a square diamond with a length and width of 54 mm, the obverse consisting of a light blue enamelled border cutting all four corners with the legend “LONG SERVICE ORDER L.S.O.” in gold letters, on vertical and horizontal planes, and surrounding the centre motif consisting, in relief, of a gold laurel wreath supporting a scroll bearing the title “BOTSWANA DEFENCE FORCE” surmounted by two circles, the outer circle enamelled in light blue bearing the legend “THEBE YA SECHABA” in gold letters, and the inner red enamelled circle with the letters “B.D.F.” in gold, the inner circles being connected by crossed swords and surmounted by the Coat of Arms of Botswana, in gold relief, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (4) The order shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 2,6 mm width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths—

3.    Distinguished Service Medal

    (1) The Distinguished Service Medal (D.S.M.) may be awarded to a commissioned officer in the Botswana Defence Force who has completed not less than 20 years’ continuous service in the Botswana Defence Force.

    (2) In the calculation of time, in making the award, any previous service in the Botswana Police Force of such officer shall be taken into consideration.

    (3) The medal shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold, and shall be circular in shape with a diameter of 40 mm, the obverse consisting of a green enamelled circular border with the legend “DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL D.S.M.” in gold letters, and an inner circle covered by a hexagonal plate consisting, in relief, of a laurel wreath supporting a scroll bearing the title “BOTSWANA DEFENCE FORCE” surmounted by two circles, the outer circle enamelled in bottle green bearing the legend “THEBE YA SECHABA”, the inner circle enamelled in red and with the letters “B.D.F.”, the inner circles being connected by crossed swords and surmounted by the Coat of Arms of Botswana, in gold relief, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (4) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribben 2,6 mm in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths—

4.    Duty Code Order

    (1) The Duty Code Order (D.C.O.) may be awarded to any member of the administrative and technical staff of the Botswana Defence Force for devotion to duty.

    (2) The order shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold, and shall be diamond shaped with 55 mm sides, showing a stand at each corner, the obverse consisting of four circles, the first border circle of matted gold is embossed “DUTY CODE ORDER D.C.O.” in gold letters, the second circle enamelled in bottle green bears the legend “THEBE YA SECHABA” in gold letters, the third circle is of plain matted gold, the fourth and central circle is of red enamel with the letters “B.D.F.” in gold, the four circles being connected by gold embossed crossed swords, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (3) The order shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 2,6 mm width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths—

5.    Military Service Medal

    (1) The Military Service Medal (M.S.M.) may be awarded to any member of the Botswana Defence Force for sound operational conduct in the face of an enemy.

    (2) The medal shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold, and shall be circular in shape with a diameter of 40 mm, the obverse consisting of a white enamelled border with the legend “MILITARY SERVICE MEDAL M.S.M.” in gold letters, the centre circle of matted gold bearing a black enamelled cross with a black centre circle with the letters “B.D.F.” in gold, surmounted by crossed swords in gold relief, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (3) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon 2,6 mm in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths—

6.    Conduct Leadership Cross

    (1) The Conduct Leadership Cross (C.L.C.) may be awarded to any member of the Botswana Defence Force for good, practical operational leadership in the face of an enemy.

    (2) The cross shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold, and shall be in the shape of a cross with a width and length of 40 mm placed on a red enamelled 12 mm square, and with an 8 mm circular disc in green enamel with the letters “C.L.C.” in gold letters positioned in the centre of the cross, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (3) The cross shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 2,6 mm width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths—

7.    Defence Force Medal for Bravery

    (1) The Defence Force Medal for Bravery (D.F.M.B.) may be awarded to any member of the Botswana Defence Force for conspicuous heroism and courage performed otherwise than in action against an enemy.

    (2) The medal shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold, and shall be circular in shape with a diameter of 40 mm, the obverse consisting of a border circle enamelled in light blue bearing the legend “DEFENCE FORCE MEDAL FOR BRAVERY D.F.M.B.” in gold letters, with an inner gold circle consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana mounted in the centre of a red enamelled V, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (3) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 2,6 mm width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths—

8.    Conduct Valour Cross

    (1) The Conduct Valour Cross (C.V.C.) may be awarded to any member of the Botswana Defence Force for acts of conspicuous valour performed in action against an enemy.

    (2) The cross shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold, the obverse consisting of two circles placed on a four-pointed gold star with a width of 46 mm and a length of 50 mm between the ends of the diagonally opposite rays, with the outer circle enamelled in light blue bearing the legend “CONDUCT VALOUR CROSS C.V.C.” in gold letters, and the inner circle enamelled in white with the letters “B.D.F.” in gold, the two circles being connected by gold crossed swords, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (3) The cross shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon 2,6 mm in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths—

9.    Pearl Jubilee Medal

    (1) The Pearl Jubilee Medal (P.J.M.) shall be awarded to any member of the Botswana Defence Force who has completed 30 years of honourable continuous service in the Botswana Defence Force.

    (2) The medal shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24ct gold, circular in shape with a diameter of 40mm, the obverse consisting of a black circular border with the legend “PEARL JUBILEE” in pearl letters, an inner diamond consisting, in relief, of a gold scroll bearing the title “BOTSWANA DEFENCE FORCE” summoned by two circles, the outer circle enameled in bottle green bearing the legend “THEBE YA SECHABA” in gold letters, the small inner circle enameled in red with the letters “BDF” in gold, the two circles connected by crossed swords and summoned by the Coat of Arms of Botswana in gold relief, and the reverse engraved on it the names of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (3) The ribbon shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 16mm length and 26mm width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and width—

10.    Special Service Medal

    (1) The Special Service Medal (S.S.M.) shall be awarded to any member of the Botswana Defence Force in recognition of a special service performed under exceptional circumstances, which service may include sustained voluntary service to a civilian community or any other organisation where participation is not intended for any specific gains, as well as any form of selfless participation in specific operations of humanitarian nature and the medal shall be issued with a bar that identifies the special service being recognised.

    (2) The order shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24ct gold, circular in shape with a diameter of 40mm, the obverse green, followed immediately by a red hexagonal ring, within the hexagon shall be a green circle embossed upon it the legend “SPECIAL SERVICE MEDAL S.S.M.” in gold letters, the innermost silver plated circle 20mm in diameter bearing the Botswana Defence Force emblem in the middle, the reverse engraved on it the names of the recipient and the date of the award, and the medal shall be affixed to a ribbon 60mm in length from the top of the ribbon bar.

    (3) The ribbon shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 16mm length and 26mm width with solid maroon bar.

11.    Foreign Service Medal

    (1) The Foreign Service Medal (F.S.M.) shall be awarded to any member of the Botswana Defence Force for honourable service outside the borders of Botswana on operational deployment and related foreign assignment of collective training for a period not less than two months.

    (2) The order shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24ct gold, hexagonal in shape and measuring 40mm from each opposite corner, the obverse enameled blue, followed immediately by a black ring with red outline and embossed upon it the legend “FOREIGN SERVICE MEDAL F.S.M.” from left to right, with “F.S.M.” centred at the bottom of the ring all in silver letters, the immediate inner circle of 8mm silver ring, the innermost white circle bearing the world map, the reverse engraved on it the names and particulars of the recipient and the date of the award, and the award shall be affixed to a ribbon 60mm in length from the top of the ribbon bar.

    (3) The ribbon shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 16mm length and 26mm width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and width—

12.    Thebe Ya Sechaba

    (1) The Thebe Ya Sechaba (T.Y.S.) shall be awarded posthumously to a legal beneficiary of a deceased member of the Botswana Defence Force who dies in the line of duty but precludes death as a result of accident, sickness or natural causes.

    (2) The medal shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24ct gold circular in shape with a diameter of 40mm, the obverse consisting of a red enameled circular border with the legend “THEBE YA SECHABA” matted in gold letters, consisting of a silver inner of 30mm diameter, surmounted on the circle shall be a black and white African shield conforming in size to a height of 20mm and a width of 15mm, a gold metallic Botswana Defence Force emblem affixed to the centre of the ribbon, the reverse engraved on it the names and particulars of the recipient and the date of the award, and the medal shall be affixed to a ribbon 60mm in length from the top of the ribbon bar.

    (3) The medal shall be affixed to a woven ribbon of 26mm width, a gold 10mm x 10mm brooch affixed to the centre of the ribbon and the medal shall consist of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and width—

1.    Citation

    These Regulations may be cited as the Botswana Honours Regulations.

2.    Interpretation

    In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires, “recipient” means the person to whom an honour has been awarded.

3.    The Naledi ya Botswana

    (1) The Naledi ya Botswana shall be struck in silver and shall be in the shape of a six-pointed star with a width of one and three quarter inches between the ends of diagonally opposite rays, and with a circular disk in the middle with a diameter of seven eighths of an inch, the obverse consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the legend “REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA” and the reverse having engraved upon it the words “FOR CONSPICUOUS SERVICE”, the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (2) The honour shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a silver clasp, affixed to a silk ribbon one and a half inches in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and of the following widths—

        Azure blue:

Seven sixteenths of an inch

        White:

One eighth of an inch

        Black:

Three eighths of an inch

        White:

One eighth of an inch

        Azure blue:

Seven sixteenths of an inch

    (3) The award of the honour shall entitle the recipient to add the letters N.Y.B. after his name, but shall not entitle him to any individual precedence.

4.    The Cross of Gallantry

    (1) The Cross of Gallantry shall be struck in silver in the shape of an equal armed cross with a width of one and three quarter inches between the ends of diagonally opposite arms and with a circular disk in the middle with a diameter of seven eighths of an inch, the obverse consisting in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the legend “REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA” and the reverse having engraved upon it the words “FOR GALLANTRY”, the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (2) The honour shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a silver clasp affixed to a silk ribbon one and a half inches in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and of the following widths—

        White:

One eighth of an inch

        Azure blue:

Seven sixteenths of an inch

        Black:

Three eighths of an inch

        Azure blue:

Seven sixteenths of an inch

        White:

One eighth of an inch

    (3) The award of the honour shall entitle the recipient to add the letters C.G. after his name, but it shall not entitle him to any individual precedence.

    (4) The honour may be awarded in time of peace or war.

5.    The Presidential Order of Honour

    (1) The Presidential Order of Honour shall be struck in silver gilt and shall be circular in shape with a diameter of one and three eighths inches, the obverse consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the legend “REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA ORDER OF HONOUR” and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (2) The honour shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a silver gilt clasp, affixed to a silk ribbon one and a half inches in width of an azure blue colour.

    (3) The award of the honour shall entitle the recipient to add the letters P.H. after his name, but shall not entitle him to individual precedence.

6.    The Presidential Order of Meritorious Service

    (1) The Presidential Order of Meritorious Service shall be struck in bronze and shall be in the shape of a five-pointed star with a width of one and three quarter inches between the ends of alternate points and with a circular disk in the middle with a diameter of seven eighths of an inch, the obverse consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of     Botswana and the reverse having engraved upon it the words “FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE” and the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (2) The honour shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a bronze clasp, affixed to a silk ribbon one and a half inches in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and the following widths—

        Black:

One quarter of an inch

        Azure blue:

One inch

        Black:

One quarter of an inch

    (3) The award of the honour shall entitle the recipient to add the letters P.M.S. after his name, but shall not entitle him to any individual precedence.

7.    The Botswana Police Medal for Meritorious Service

    (1) The Botswana Police Medal for Meritorious Service shall be struck in silver and shall be circular in shape, with a diameter of one and three eighths inches, the obverse consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the reverse bearing, in relief, the words “BOTSWANA POLICE FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE”, the name, rank and number of the recipient and the date of the award engraved on the rim thereof.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a silver clasp, affixed to a silk ribbon one and a half inches in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and of the following widths—

        Old Gold:

One quarter of an inch

        Maroon:

Three eighths of an inch

        Old Gold:

One quarter of an inch

        Maroon:

Three eighths of an inch

        Old Gold:

One quarter of an inch

    (3) The award of the honour shall entitle the recipient to add the letters B.P.M. after his name, but it shall not entitle the recipient to any individual precedence.

8.    The Botswana Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal

    (1) The Botswana Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal shall be struck in silver and shall be circular in shape, with a diameter of one and three eighths of an inch, the obverse consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the reverse bearing, in relief the legend “BOTSWANA POLICE FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT”, the name, rank and number of the recipient and the date of the award being engraved upon the rim thereof.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a silver clasp, affixed to a silk ribbon one and a half inches in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and of the following widths—

        Old Gold:

One quarter of an inch

        Maroon:

One inch

        Old Gold:

One quarter of an inch

    (3) The medal may be awarded in such circumstances as may be prescribed under the provisions of the Police Act (Cap. 21:01).

9.    The Botswana Prison Service Medal

    (1) The Botswana Prison Service Medal shall be struck in silver and shall be circular in shape, with a diameter of one and three eighths inches, the obverse consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the legend “REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA” and the reverse having, in relief, the legend “BOTSWANA PRISON SERVICE FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT”, the name, rank and number of the recipient and the date of the award being engraved on the rim thereof.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a silver clasp, affixed to a silk ribbon one and a half inches in width, and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and the following widths—

        Azure blue:

Three sixteenths of an inch

        White:

Three sixteenths of an inch

        Black:

Three sixteenths of an inch

        Olive green:

Three eighths of an inch

        Black:

Three sixteenths of an inch

        White:

Three sixteenths of an inch

    (3) A clasp to the medal shall be attached to the ribbon when the medal itself is worn. A small star emblem denoting the award of each clasp shall be worn on the ribbon when the ribbon only is worn.

10.    The Presidential Certificate of Honour Medal

    (1) The Presidential Certificate of Honour Medal shall be struck in bronze and shall be circular in shape with an eight pointed star on the outer most edge, with a diameter of one and three sixteenth’s inches, the obverse consisting, in relief, in the circle, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the legend “REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA” and the reverse having in relief, the legend “PRESIDENTIAL CERTIFICATE OF HONOUR”, the name, the rank and the number of the recipient and date of the award being engraved on the inner most ring thereof.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendant from a bronze clasp affixed to a silk ribbon one and a half inches in width and one and twenty five thirty second’s inches in length, and consisting of horizontal stripes of Botswana National Flag from top to bottom in the following colours and the following widths—

        Azure Blue:

Nineteen thirty second’s inches

        White:

Three thirty second’s inches

        Black:

Twenty five sixty fourth’s inches

        White:

Three thirty second’s inches

        Azure Blue:

Nineteen thirty second’s inches

    (3) A clasp to the medal shall be attached to the ribbon when the medal itself is worn.

11.    The Presidential Order of Botswana

    (1) The insignia for the Presidential Order of Botswana shall consist of an eight-pointed Star worn on the left breast and a broad sash with sash badge worn over the right shoulder to the left hip.

    (2) The Star shall be struck in 9 ct white gold with five graduated points between each of the eight lower points. Superimposed in the centre shall be the Coat of Arms of Botswana enamelled on 9 ct yellow gold. The diameter between the longest point of the Star shall be three and seven-sixteenths inches and the size of the Coat of Arms shall be two inches in width and one and a half inches in height.

    (3) The sash shall be made in watered silk and shall have a width of three and a half inches, consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths—

        Azure Blue:

One and five sixteenths inches

        White:

Three sixteenths of an inch

        Black:

Eight sixteenths of an inch

        White:

Three sixteenths of an inch

        Azure Blue:

One and five sixteenths inches.

    It shall be embellished by a bow of the same riband at the lower end.

    (4) From the sash bow shall be suspended a badge consisting of the Coat of Arms of Botswana enamelled on 9 ct yellow gold and measuring two inches in width and one a half inches in height.

    (5) Additionally, there shall be a medal ribbon of watered silk with a gilt rosette superimposed in the centre (for uniform wear) measuring one and a half inches in width and of the same design as the sash, each stripe measuring as follows—

        Azure Blue:

Nine sixteenths of an inch

        White:

Three thirty-seconds of an inch

        Black:

Three sixteenths of an inch

        White:

Three thirty-seconds of an inch

        Azure Blue:

Nine sixteenths of an inch

    (6) The award of the honour shall entitle the recipient to add the letters P.O.B. after his name, but shall not entitle him to any individual precedence.

12.    The Botswana Prison Service Medal for Meritorious Service

    (1) The medal shall be struck in silver and shall be circular in shape, with a diameter of one and three eighths inches, the obverse consisting in relief of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the reverse bearing in relief, the words “BOTSWANA PRISON SERVICE MEDAL FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE”.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a silver clasp, affixed to a silk ribbon one and a half inches in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths—

        Olive green:

One quarter of an inch

        Black:

Three eighths of an inch

        Red:

One quarter of an inch

        Black:

Three eighths of an inch

        Olive Green:

One quarter of an inch

    (3) The award of the honour shall entitle the recipient to add the letters M.M.S. after his name, but it shall not entitle him to any individual precedence.

13.    The Botswana Police Distinguished Service Order

    (1) The Botswana Police Distinguished Service Order shall be struck in sterling silver and shall represent a Maltese Cross one and three quarters inches in height, the obverse consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the legend “REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA”, and the reverse having, in relief, the legend “BOTSWANA POLICE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER”, together with the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast pendent from a sterling silver clasp, affixed to a plain woven maroon coloured ribbon, one and a half inches in width.

14.    The Botswana Police Jubilee Service Medal

    (1) The Botswana Police Jubilee Service Medal shall be struck in sterling silver and shall be circular in shape with a diameter of one and three eighths inches, the obverse consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the legend “REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA”, and the reverse bearing, in relief, the legend “BOTSWANA POLICE JUBILEE SERVICE MEDAL”, the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a sterling silver clasp affixed to a plain woven gold coloured ribbon, one and a half inches in width.

15.    The Botswana Police Medal for Conspicuous Bravery

    (1) The Botswana Police Medal for Conspicuous Bravery shall be struck in sterling silver and shall be circular in shape with a diameter of one and three eighths inches, the obverse consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the legend “REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA”, and the reverse bearing, in relief, the legend “BOTSWANA POLICE MEDAL FOR CONSPICUOUS BRAVERY”, together with the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a Sterling silver clasp affixed to a plain woven ribbon one and a half inches in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths—

        Maroon:

Three quarters of an inch

        Gold:

Three quarters of an inch

16.    The Botswana Police Centenary Medal

    (1) The Botswana Police Centenary Medal shall be struck in sterling silver, circular in shape with a diameter of one and three eighths inches and encircled by a five-pointed star, the obverse consisting, in relief, of the legend “REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA”, and the reverse bearing , in relief, the Botswana Police Badge, the legend “FIRST CENTENARY” and the legend “NGWAGA YA BOLEKGOLO”.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a sterling silver clasp affixed to a plain woven Botswana flag supported on each length by a maroon coloured ribbon one and half inches in width.

17.    The Botswana Prison Service Distinguished Service Order

    (1) The Order shall be struck in sterling silver and shall represent a Maltese cross one and three fifths inches in height, the obverse consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the legend “REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA” and the reverse bearing in relief, the legend “BOTSWANA PRISON SERVICE FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE”.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a silver clasp, affixed to a silk ribbon one and half inches in width, and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and the following widths—

        Azure Blue:

One quarter of an inch

        Olive Green:

One inch

        Azure Blue:

One quarter of an inch

    (3) A clasp to the Medal shall be attached to the ribbon when the Medal is worn. A small star emblem denoting the award of the clasp shall be worn on the ribbon when the ribbon only is worn.

18.    The Botswana Prison Service Jubilee Service Medal

    (1) The medal shall be struck in sterling silver and shall be circular in shape with a diameter of one and three tenths inches, the obverse consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the legend “REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA” and the reverse bearing in relief, the legend “BOTSWANA PRISON SERVICE FOR JUBILEE SERVICE”.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast pendent from a silver clasp, affixed to a woven silk ribbon one and a half inches in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths—

        White:

One fifth of an inch

        Olive green:

One and one fifteenth inches

        White:

One fifth of an inch

19.    The Botswana Prison Service Medal for Conspicuous Bravery

    (1) The medal shall be struck in sterling silver and shall be circular in shape with a diameter of one and three tenths inches, the obverse consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana and the legend “REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA” and the reverse bearing, in relief, the legend “BOTSWANA PRISON SERVICE FOR CONSPICUOUS BRAVERY”.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a silver clasp, affixed to a silk ribbon one and a half inches in width, and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths—

        Azure blue:

Three quarters of an inch

        White:

Three quarters of an inch

20.    The Botswana Teachers Long and Distinguished Service Award

    (1) The Botswana Teachers Long and Distinguished Service Medal shall be struck in sterling silver in the shape of five-pointed star with a width of 4.3 cm between the ends of alternate points and having a circular disk in the middle of a diameter of 2.2 cm, with the obverse consisting, in relief, of the Botswana Coat of Arms and the reverse bearing the words “For Long and Distinguished Teaching Service”, the names of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a silver clasp affixed to a silk ribbon 4.3 cm in width and consisting of two sets of vertical stripes in Botswana National Flag colours and in the same proportion as the National Flag. The two sets shall appear adjacent to each other on a yellow background.

21.    The Botswana Teachers Meritorious Service Award

    (1) The Botswana Teachers Meritorious Service Medal shall be struck in sterling silver in the shape of the Botswana One Pula Coin released on 23 August, 1976, with the obverse consisting in relief, of the Botswana Coat of Arms and the reverse bearing the words “For Meritorious Service in the Teaching Profession”, the names of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a silver clasp affixed to a silk ribbon 4.3 cm in width and consisting of vertical stripes of black, white and blue ribbon with each colour taking 1/3 of the ribbon.

22.    The Botswana Teachers’ Silver Jubilee Medal

    (1) The Botswana Teachers’ Silver Jubilee Medal shall be struck in sterling silver in the shape of the Botswana One Pula Coin released in 1976, diameter of 29,5 mm, round and edge of 12 scallops with smooth edge with obverse consisting of the Botswana Coat of Arms and the reverse bearing the words ‘For Botswana Teachers’ Silver Jubilee Medal’, the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (2) The Medal shall be worn on the left breast pendent from a black bordered white ribbon. The black part being three fifths (3/5) of the ribbon.

23.    The Botswana Teachers’ Mid-Career Medal

    (1) The Botswana Teachers’ Mid-Career Medal shall be struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel in the shape of the Botswana One Pula Coin released in 1976, diameter 29,5 mm, round and smooth edges, with the obverse consisting of the Botswana Coat of Arms and the reverse bearing the words “For Botswana Teachers’ Mid-Career Medal”, the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast pendent from a white ribbon 4,3 cm in width.

23A.The Golden Jubilee Medal for Outstanding Achievement

    (1) The Golden Jubilee Medal for Outstanding Achievement shall—

    (a)    in the front, be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold, circular in shape with a diameter of 40mm, Botswana Coat of Arms in black, enamelled circular border with the legend, “FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE” in gold letters and the name of recipients in gold letters at the bottom; and

    (b)    at the back, consist of “50 with Zebra” between two golden laurel leaf crowns, below 50, the legend, “BOTSWANA UNITED AND PROUD NATION” in black letters, enamelled circular border with the legend, “FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE” in gold letters.

    (2) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to woven ribbon of 32mm in Botswana flag colours consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths:

Azure blue:

10.5mm

White:

3mm

Black:

5mm

White:

3mm

Azure blue:

10.5mm.

    (3) The Golden Jubilee Medal for Outstanding Achievement shall be awarded only in 2016.

24.    Pattern of honours to be deposited

    A pattern of every honour, together with a pattern or reproduction thereof in miniature, half the size of the honour, which may be worn on certain occasions by persons to whom the medal has been awarded or by his widow, shall be deposited and kept in the office of the President of Botswana and in the Government Archives.

25.    Award of honour to prisoner of war or missing person

    If an honour is awarded to any person who is a prisoner of war or who is missing, such award shall not be published until the person concerned has ceased to be a prisoner of war or to be missing.

26.    Forfeiture or restoration of an honour

    (1) The President may direct that an honour shall be forfeited where the recipient has been—

    (a)    convicted of treason, sedition, mutiny or any similar offence; or

    (b)    sentenced to imprisonment without the option of any fine for a period of not less than six months or has been cashiered, dismissed or discharged from any part of the service of the Republic of Botswana with ignominy.

    (2) If the award of an honour has, in terms of subregulation (1) been forfeited, the President may restore such medal if he or she considers that the recipient concerned is, in every way, worthy of such restoration.

    (3) The recipient concerned shall, on the forfeiting of his honour under subregulation (1) surrender such honour to the officer designated under regulation 28.

27.    Authority for issue

    (1) Honours and the ribbons thereof shall, after award, be provided to a recipient against payment.

    (2) In addition such ribbon or a miniature of the honour may be provided to a recipient against payment.

28.    Registration

    An officer in the public service designated thereto by the President shall maintain a register in which particulars are recorded as to the person to whom an honour has been awarded and the nature of the award made.

29.    Loss or disposal

    (1) No person to whom an honour has been presented shall pledge, sell, barter or dispose of such honour other than by way of testamentary bequest.

    (2) If an honour is lost, the person concerned shall submit a written report of the loss to the officer designated under regulation 28, who may authorise the replacement thereof, whether free or at the expense of the recipient.

30.    Order of precedence

    (1) The order of precedence of honours shall be—

    The Presidential Order of Meritorious Service

}> equal precedence

    The Botswana Police Medal for Meritorious Service

    The Botswana Police Distinguished Service Order

    (2) Botswana honours will take precedence over any foreign or Commonwealth honour:

    Provided that where a Commonwealth citizen in the service of the Republic of Botswana is awarded an honour by the country of which he or she is citizen, the honour will take precedence over Botswana honours.

    (3) Honour insignia from whatever source or country other than campaign medals shall precede campaign medals.

31.    Wear with normal day dress and morning dress

    (1) An honour shall be worn with normal day dress or morning dress suspended from a horizontal metal brooch by its ribbon in a position equidistant from the centre of the breast on the one side of the armpit seam of the jacket on the other and above the left breast jacket pocket at a distance of approximately six to eight inches from the next shoulder seam of the jacket:

    Provided that ladies may wear an honour on the left side of the dress below the shoulder as high up as is considered convenient.

    (2) When two or more honours are worn they should be suspended in order of precedence from a metal brooch (no part of which should be seen) and worn in the manner prescribed in subregulation (1).

    (3) When honours cannot on account of their number be suspended from a brooch so as to be seen fully they shall be worn so as to overlap, and not, unless this is unavoidable, suspended from a second brooch.

    (4) Where an honour is suspended from a ribbon the length of ribbon should be such as to make a total length suspension of four inches from the top of the horizontal brooch to the bottom of the star, medal or medallion.

    (5) Ladies may wear miniatures of an honour upon any occasion upon which honours may be worn.

    (6) In the case of evening dress an honour shall be worn in miniature mounted on a bar in brooch form, pinned horizontally on the left lapel of the coat midway in height between the armpit and the peak of the shoulder.

32    Occasions for wearing of honours

    Honours shall be worn on all State ceremonial occasions to which the recipient is invited on President’s Day and Botswana Day and on other occasions of State ceremony to which the recipient is invited where the invitation states the honours shall be worn.

33.    Honours to be kept clean

    Honours shall be kept clean.

34.    Awards of foreign honours to persons in Botswana

    (1) A person in the public service of Botswana who is not a citizen of Botswana may not wear a foreign or Commonwealth honour awarded to him after the commencement of these Regulations while in such service without the permission of the President.

    (2) No Botswana citizen may accept any foreign or Commonwealth honour or accept the insignia thereof without the consent of the President, which permission may be either full permission or restricted permission.

    (3) Where restricted permission has been granted under the provisions of subregulation (2) the honour shall be worn only on the occasions specified in the permission.

    (4) Application for permission under the provisions of subregulation (2) shall be made by the Government desirous of making the award to the Office of the President, and if the application is granted, notice thereof shall be given by the Minister in the Gazette.

    (5) Ladies may wear miniatures of an honour upon any occasion upon which honours may be worn.

    (6) In the case of evening dress an honour shall be worn in miniature mounted on a bar in brooch form, pinned horizontally on the left label of the coat midway in height between the armpit and the peak of the shoulder.
